Will Smale has been invited to take part in a talent testing programme while Charlotte Scarborough and Jessica Thornton attended an England trial.  This was part of the ECB Talent Identification Programme held at Loughborough.  Jessica Thornton has since been selected for the England Women Development Programme (EWDP) Under 15 winter training programme.

16th September

We've celebrated the outstanding achievements of our county batters and bowlers and now it is time to recognise two stand-out performances by fielders.

                        Will Davey                                           James Archer

Will Davey took five catches behind the stumps for the Under 15s in the match against Herefordshire.  James Archer, meanwhile, took four catches in an Under 11 match against Herefordshire plus another three in the match versus Pembrokeshire.

3rd September

This year's youth cricket season was brought to an exciting end on a glorious day at Croesyceiliog CC last Sunday.  Newport repeated their feat of last year by becoming Under 13 and Under 15 Champions against Chepstow and Croesyceiliog respectively.  They were thwarted in their attempt to repeat the treble, however, by Chepstow who won the Under 11 title off the very last ball of a memorable Finals Day.  For full details of the matches, with photos, press here.

31st August

We celebrated our centurions earlier in the month and now it's time for the bowlers who took 'fifers' during the season.

                          Ben Davies                                                Morgan Bevans

At Under 11, Ben Davies took 5 wickets for 24 runs against Wiltshire and Morgan Bevans a remarkable 5 for 7 in just two overs against Herefordshire.

                       Ryan Ward                                                    Sam Hope-Bell

At Under 14, Ryan Ward took 5 for 25 against Cardiff & Vale while Sam Hope-Bell took 5 for 22 against Pembrokeshire.

At Under 15, James Jacob took a remarkable 5 wickets for just 6 runs from ten overs.

31st August

Unfortunately, we can't report on a hat-trick of wins in the Wales Regional Championships as the Gwent Young Cricketers Under 15s were unable to overcome Pembrokeshire in dismal conditions yesterday.  However, they competed right up to the end.

30th August

Well done to the Gwent Young Cricketers Under 12s who became the Wales Regional Champions yesterday!

29th August

Well done to the Gwent Young Cricketers Under 11s who became the Wales Regional Champions yesterday!

27th August

Congratulations to the Gwent Young Cricketers Under 11, 12 and 15 squads who have all reached the Wales Regional Championships Finals.  The details of the matches are:  Under 11 v Eryri - Wednesday, 28th August at Newport CC starting at 11.30am;  Under 12 v Cardiff & Vale  - Thursday, 29th August at Lisvane CC starting at 12 noon; Under 15 v Pembroke  - Friday, 30th August at Pontypridd CC starting at 12 noon.  We wish them every success.

21st August

Panteg CC flew the flag for Gwent cricket as they won the 2013 Gwalia Welsh Cup against Llandudno CC at the SWALEC Stadium on Sunday.  The team was packed with Gwent Young Cricketers including Captain Ian Bird and Man-of-the-Match Carwyn James.  He scored 61no as Panteg won by 9 wickets with 18 overs to spare!  Carwyn is pictured above in his Under 14 days.  (If he sends me an up-to-date photo, and an appropriate inducement, I might just replace it!! - Ed)

9th August

As we move into the last three weeks of the season, the Wales National Championships have reached the semi-final stage.  It's good to report that the Under 11, 12, 13 and 15 squads have each reached the last four while the Under 14s only failed to do so by three points.  Good luck to everybody in the forthcoming matches!

3rd August

Another batter making a century!  This time it was Rose Evans who became the first Gwent Girls centurion of the season.  She batted throughout the forty overs of the innings against Cardiff & Vale to score an unbeaten 118. Congratulations Rose!

31st July

Another week, another centurion!  This time we celebrate Scott O'Leary's maiden century for the Gwent Young Cricketers U12 team against Cardiff & Vale.  He carried his bat through the innings for a fantastic 131no.  Well done, Scott.

18th July

It's great to report another record-breaking individual performance after the one reported two days ago.  This time, it's Alex Horton who, at the age of nine years, has become Gwent Young Cricketers youngest centurion. His century, against Mid Glamorgan U10s, came off 69 balls and included 17 boundaries.  Congratulations, Alex!

16th July

On the day that a certain young Australian was putting his name in the cricket books in the First Test, a 13 year-old Gwent Young Cricketer was doing the same for his county.  Against Mid Glamorgan U13s, in the National Championships, Sam Hope-Bell scored an unbeaten 106 out of his team's total of 134 for 2.  His century came off 69 balls and included 20 boundaries.  Well done Sam!

8th July

Congratulations to Croesyceiliog CC who became the Cricket Wales National U15 Club Champions yesterday and received their trophies and medals from Glamorgan opening bowler Mike Reed.  After defeating Llandysul CC in the semi-final by ten wickets, they beat Llandudno CC in the final.  Hywel Rose (who had to retire on reaching 50) and Jamie Norman (45) led the way to a total of 148 for 3 in their 20 overs.  They then restricted their opponents to 124 for 5.  Croesyceiliog go on to play Ombersley CC, the Worcestershire champions, for a place in the last sixteen of the ECB UK National Championships.

4th July

Congratulations to Gwent Young Cricketer Harry Powell (Newport) who has achieved the best ever bowling figures in one-day cricket for a Glamorgan bowler.  Playing for the 2nd XI he took 6 wickets for 8 runs in 40 balls against the MCC Young Cricketers in the 2nd XI Trophy competition.

You may also remember that Cameron Herring (Tredegar) made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire at the beginning of the season.  He has since played in five matches taking 11 catches, averaged a creditable 27 batting at no 8/9 and conceded just 48 extras in 647 overs.  Here he is keeping against Australia A.

13th June

Congratulations to all of our Gwent Young Cricketers and Gwent Girls players who have been selected for this year's Wales Squads.  To find out who they are, click here.

28th May

Although the weather is nothing to write home about, there has still been plenty of cricket played around Gwent this month.  The League and Shield competitions are well under way and we have played 18 boys' and girls' county fixtures in total. In these we have had no less than 13 'gold star' performances which includes our first centurion of the season.  Congratulations to Robbie Clarke for his 126, out of a team total of 215 for the Boys U13 team.   For full details check out appropriate pages.

28th April

This week sees the start of the 2013 Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket League and Shield competitions as well as the Gwent Young Cricketers representative campaigns.  Good luck for the season to everyone involved in youth cricket in Gwent.

14th April

There is an anticipation in the air with just two weeks to go to the start of the Monmouthshire Youth Cricket League and Shield competitions.  There have been some interesting changes to the playing conditions in the League.  To find out about these and who your team is playing in either, click on the two relevant buttons on the left.

10th April

It's a great to start off the season with some some good news with 18 year-old Cameron Herring making his first-class debut for Gloucestershire today as a wicket keeper batsman.  Cam played all his youth cricket for his home team of Tredegar and for Gwent Young Cricketers from the age of ten when he made his first fifty for his county.  He went on to make nine for them up to the age of fifteen with a highest score of 80.  He was always a talented keeper and his best performance was at U15 against Devon when he took three stumpings and didn't concede a bye in a total of 212 and followed this up with 55 with the bat!

Throughout his youth career he shared the gloves with Tom Baker (Blackwood) who played regularly for Glamorgan 2nd XI last year but is kept out of the side by another Gwent Young Cricketer, Mark Wallace (Abergavenny).  There must be something in the water or perhaps it has something to do with the encouragement and coaching these players have received from their families and club and county coaches!
