County Fixtures

The boys play friendly matches against English county sides at Under 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 and enter the Welsh National Championships against the other regions in Wales in the same age groups. The Under 12, 13 and 14 Championships are residential while the Under 11s and 15s are played through the season.  The Under 10s play in a Welsh Festival and the girls play at Under 11, 13 and 17.

The county teams are drawn from the coaching squads and based on the previous years’ performances plus progress made in the winter coaching sessions. The door is never closed, however, and several players have forced their way into teams, as replacements for injured players, because of good performances at club level during the season.

In 2007, Gwent Young Cricketers were Under 11 and 13 Welsh Champions and Under 15 semi-finalists.  The Under 10s were unbeaten at the Welsh Festival and the Under 12s won their only game before the finals were abandoned. There was an overall win ratio of 57% in all matches and 82% in the Welsh National Championships.  The season’s results were:-

An excellent season with just three losses on difficult pitches in the Friendlies and an unbeaten run in the Welsh Championship.  The performance in the Final summed up the tremendous resilience and tenacity of the squad.  First, they recovered from 12 for 5 to make 104.  Then, with Cardiff & Vale seemingly cruising to victory at 54 for 1 they bowled them out for just 72. Ieuan Veall and Ryan Cobb scored consistently while Corey Wallace was regularly among the wickets.

A rather disappointing season with many games lost to the weather and losses in all but one of the Friendlies.  However, confidence was high that they would repeat last year’s victory in the Welsh Championship after a win in their first match only for the weather to cause its abandonment.

An excellent season which saw just two defeats in the Friendlies and an unbeaten record in the Welsh Championship which saw four convincing victories.  Callum Herring and Henry Lewis hit some big scores while Jack Norman and Cameron Herring were consistent with the bat as were George Davies, Jake Kings and Simon Veall with the ball.

The squad performed very well considering it was without its three West of England players for much of the season due to injury and national call-ups.  They played well in all but one of their Welsh Championship matches and lost to Cardiff & Vale in the semi-final through failing to adapt to a pitch which was a bit of a lottery.  Nathan Payne batted consistently well throughout.
