It is with regret that we have had to discontinue the Academy
due to lack of funding and a declining interest from players whose time is
increasingly taken up with GCSE examinations. However, we still offer the
Cricket Young Leaders course with the view to players becoming involved youth
coaching. Take-up of this is good and eight of our coaches involved in
thhis winter's GACC coaching sessions played for Gwent Young Cricketers within
the last ten years.
The idea of setting up a Gwent Academy for our U16 male
players was the brainchild of Paul Morgan (then the U15 Gwent Manager). He
was concerned at the number of players who are lost to the game of cricket when
they finish playing at youth level and it was his wish that something should be
provided for some of our young cricketers to help them make the transition
between youth and senior cricket.
The Academy’s programme consisted
of three main elements:
-
A meeting involving the player, his family
and a representative of the player's club, with
the Academy Manager, to look at the best way for
the player to move forward.
-
Participation in a Cricket Young Leaders
course with the view to the player becoming
involved in his club's youth coaching
organisation.
-
A two-day coaching session during the Easter
holidays plus a one-day session during the
summer half-term.
-
A short programme of matches.
Players who have attended the GACC coaching
sessions were, in the year they reached they age of 15,
invited to apply for membership and will be
subject to a selection process.
